Historical notes: The elegant and sober Palazzo Beccadelli, in Palermo, with its three floors above ground overlooking the square of the same name, seems to better represent the will of a modern bourgeois client than that of the aristocratic family who wanted and built it, the Beccadelli of Bologna, Princes of Camporeale. The building is the result of a radical transformation that involved an estate purchased in 1879 by Pietro Paolo Beccadelli Acton, Marquis of Sambuca and Prince of Camporeale (Naples 1852 – Rome 1918), deputy and senator of the Kingdom, then city councilor and mayor of Palermo (1900), who had decided to move to the city after having lived between Naples, Lausanne, London, Florence and Rome. Pietro Paolo is a descendant of an important noble family, the Beccadelli of Bologna, who moved from Bologna to Palermo in the 14th century, from which descended the illustrious Antonio Beccadelli “il Panormita” (1394-1471), tutor of Alfonso I of Naples, and Simone Beccadelli (1419-1465), archbishop of Palermo. The ground floor of the villa is accessed via a large entrance and a spectacular grand staircase, in fine marble and wrought iron, which connects the first two levels. In the entrance, two monumental paintings stand out, the Portrait of Pietro Beccadelli of Bologna, Prince of Camporeale (1781) and, perhaps, the Portrait of Giuseppe Beccadelli of Bologna, his son, who took over from Bernardo Tanucci in 1776 as First Secretary of the Neapolitan kingdom. On the ground floor, in addition to a large library and a waiting room, there are several offices representing the institutions. Some rooms of the Camporeale villa still retain original furnishings: a wooden ceiling and boiseries in Umbertine style, once in eclectic style with grotesque decorations in stucco and gold; while the documented works by the Palermo painter Rocco Lentini (1887-1888) are no longer visible, perhaps whitewashed. Paintings on the walls and a variety of fireplaces, in marble or wood, characterize some rooms. On the first floor, obtained from halls of the time, there are six large reception offices, embellished with stucco and fireplaces. A second service staircase leads from the ground floor to the second floor where the large reception apartment is located, consisting of a large corner hall with a bright dining room next to it but not connected. The living area also consists of a living room, a kitchen and a pantry. The sleeping area consists of three large bedrooms. The property is served by a lift and a large cellar. The building, immersed in a precious garden of over 2,500 square meters and houses the police station for the State of the Sicily Region.
