The town is located at an altitude of 254 meters above sea level, it stretches along the crest of the hill that separates the inlets of Sanremo and Ospedaletti, in an extraordinary panoramic position. The name Coldirodi derives from the legendary presence of the Knights of Rhodes in the area. In the Middle Ages, returning from a Crusade, the Knights of Rhodes (formerly Knights of Jerusalem, then of Malta) stopped here to care for wounded companions. A hospital built near the sea by the Knights of Rhodes is said to have also given rise to the name Ospedaletti.
